When we go to the mountains, we typically are doing so because we are yearning to breathe the fresh air that can only be found far from the clouds of the city. We also tend to go there to escape our troubles and allow the magic of nature to reinvigorate us. When you are planning to escape to the Smoky Mountains, make sure you keep Wears Valley in mind, as this is truly the place to go if you are seeking to get all you can from the magic of the mountains. The Area
Lying just outside Great Smoky Mountain National Park, Wears Valley is probably not going to be the largest town you’ve ever experienced. At only three miles wide and five miles long, the area is not big by any means; however, what it lacks in size it makes up for in raw beauty! Sitting bellow Cove Mountain, (the largest mountain in this area, towering above at an additional 2,000 feet) this little valley town hosts some of the best views and hiking in the area, as well as being one of the quietest and peaceful towns you’ll ever visit. If you find yourself coming for a nice hike, make sure you stop by Metcalf Bottoms Park, as this area has a large variety of hiking trails for you to explore and truly get to know the natural world around you. As well, you will find not only the old schoolhouse, but you will also find the Walker Sisters Cabin (a group of sisters who were allowed to stay and live on the land after the national park’s creation). Finally, you’ll find some of the most popular hiking trails in the area at Metcalf bottoms and Laurel Falls!
What to Do?
While hiking is of course a favorite pastime of visitors and locals alike, this is quite surprisingly a large amount of stuff to do in this small little mountain town. For instance, you could zoom down the mountain with the wind in your face as you wind your way passed trees on either the Smoky Mountain Alpine Coaster or The Coaster at Goats on the Roof! If you are looking for a more peaceful activity, you’ll find what you’re looking for at Walden’s Creek Stables, which offers horseback riding tours. You could also experience the thrill of the rapids with Smoky Mountain River Rat Tubing, who also offer laid-back tubing trips for those not looking for a wild afternoon. You could even fly amongst the trees for a bit at Wears Valley Zipline Adventures. If you haven’t had your fill of views, then make sure you check out the Headrick Chapel, which not only is on the National Register of Historic Places, but also offers lovely views. You can even hang with the locals at one of the most popular eateries in the area, Elvira’s, for your typical favorite diner food like pancakes and sandwiches.
However, don’t forget that you are also in near the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, which hosts its own slew of hiking and things to do. Spread out almost 800 miles, this national park truly is a hiker’s and outdoor lover’s paradise. Not only is there hiking, but feel free to try your hand at a bit of fishing. Either sit by the lake, lean back, and allow the sounds of nature to drift you away as your line sits in wait, or you can stand in the river, casting your line across the water in a rhythmic arc. As well, don’t miss out on the various tours in the area, including the ability to see the woods and mountains from above on a helicopter tour!
